Akashi-Kaikyo or Pearl Bridge: Kobe-Naruto, Japan

The Akashi-Kaikyo bridge, alternatively known as the Pearl bridge was opened in Japan on 5th April, 1998; after a period of approximately ten years from the start of the construction work. This is the longest ever suspension bridge of the world with a main span of 1,991 meters. The construction of the bridge involved the participation of more than 100 contractors. 
The Akashi-Kaikyo bridge is a part of the Kobe-Naruto highway and connects the southern island of Shikoku with the main island of Honshu. The bridge is four kilometers long and crosses the waterway Akashi Sraits. The waterway connects the Kobe area of Honshu with Awaji island. The bridge effectively enhanced the commercial and industrial development of both the connecting regions.


The total length of the bridge is 3,911 meters and is divided into three spans. The central span is about 1,991 meters while there are 960 meters streached side spans. The roadway surface of the bridge is built on the top of a 14 meters deep and 35.5 meters wide truss girder system. According to the reports by the Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Authority, about 1.42 million cubic meters of concrete and 181,400 metric tons of steel were used in the total construction of the suspension bridge.
